Dealing with neck pain after a long day at work? A new 2026 study looks at how chiropractic care and simple workplace changes may help reduce chronic neck pain.

Neck Pain at Work? Your Daily Routine Could Be Part of the Problem

Have you ever finished a long day at work and noticed your neck feeling stiff, tight, or sore? Maybe you spend hours looking at a computer screen, driving, working on your feet, or constantly looking down at your phone.

For many people, neck pain has become something they simply learn to live with.

But does it have to be that way?

A recent study published in August 2026 in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine looked at something we often discuss with patients here at Desiring Health Specific Chiropractic: the importance of combining proper workplace habits with chiropractic care.

What Did the Study Find?

Researchers followed 45 industrial workers who had been dealing with chronic neck pain. They divided them into three groups.

One group received ergonomic training along with chiropractic treatment. Another received ergonomic training with a simulated chiropractic procedure, and the third received ergonomic training alone.

After four weeks, the group that received both chiropractic care and ergonomic training reported significantly greater improvements in neck pain compared with the other two groups.

All three groups experienced improvements in neck-related disability, but there was no significant difference between the groups in that area. Sleep quality also remained unchanged.

The study was relatively small and short, so more research is needed. Still, the findings suggest that combining chiropractic treatment with better workplace habits may offer additional short-term pain relief.

And that brings up something worth thinking about.

What Are You Doing Every Day That May Be Contributing to Your Neck Pain?

Think about your typical workday.

Are you sitting in front of a computer for hours without getting up? Looking down at your phone between appointments? Leaning forward while working? Or doing repetitive movements throughout your shift?

Sometimes it isn't one major injury that causes discomfort. It may be the physical demands we place on our bodies day after day.

The good news is that a few small changes may help.

Five Simple Things You Can Start Doing Today

1. Bring your screen up.

If you're constantly looking down at your laptop or monitor, try adjusting the screen so it's closer to eye level. Your neck shouldn't have to work overtime just to see what's in front of you.

2. Get up and move.

If you sit most of the day, try getting up every 20–30 minutes. Walk around, stretch a little, or simply change positions. Your body wasn't designed to stay in one position all day.

3. Pay attention to your shoulders.

Notice whether your shoulders are creeping toward your ears while you're typing or working. Relax them, keep your elbows close to your body, and avoid reaching too far for your keyboard or mouse.

4. Switch things up.

If you use a standing desk, that's great. But standing all day isn't necessarily better than sitting all day. The goal is to alternate positions and move regularly.

5. Don't ignore recurring neck pain.

Occasional soreness happens. But when your neck pain keeps returning, limits your ability to turn your head, or begins affecting everyday activities, it may be time to have it evaluated.

Where Chiropractic Care Comes In

At Desiring Health Specific Chiropractic, we see patients with neck discomfort from many different backgrounds. Some work behind desks, others have physically demanding jobs, and some aren't quite sure what started their symptoms.

One thing we emphasize is that treatment shouldn't stop at what happens during your office visit.

We also want you to understand what may be contributing to your discomfort and what you can do between visits to better manage it.

Depending on your individual needs, chiropractic care may be one part of a plan that also includes movement, exercises, and changes to your daily routine.

The goal isn't just to feel better after an appointment. It's to help you move and function better throughout your day.

A Final Thought

Your neck does a lot for you every single day, and sometimes the little things we do repeatedly can take a toll.

If you've been dealing with ongoing stiffness or neck pain, don't assume it's just something you have to put up with.

A few changes to your daily habits, along with appropriate care when needed, may make a meaningful difference.

At Desiring Health Specific Chiropractic, we're here to help you better understand your symptoms and explore your options.
